80% of doctors are interested in learning more about emergency medicine.

Ischler Institute grasps this issue, and is developing a timely interactive learning series "The Emergency CD-ROM". Unfortunately only in German.

Description

The Emergency CD-ROM is an interactive learning program, that does not depend on a rigid set of instructions for the correct handling of emergencies, but instead, brings the complex topics of emergency medicine to the user, through video, slides, animated illustrations, with the minimum necessary text. In this way, the knowledge is more deeply implanted. The scenes show the correct actions that should be taken respectively. The reactions that have been shown have value in training.

The program is structured into 7 modules (see detailed contents information). The structured learning program allows the user to answer himself or herself all the questions which appear. A time function is also included, so that the critical steps of the emergency can be taken easily within the required time.

In the videos, and on the surface (for example, in the depiction of the vital curves and values), medical equipment such as the ECG and the defibrillator are introduced with ease. In reality, feelings are needed to add to the interactive process concerning the subjects protrayed (multimedia instructions).

Subject Areas

Depending on the frequency of occurence of emergencies, the production succeeds inputting on CD these single modules in the following order:

  • Emergencies of the heart and circulation
  • Neurological emergencies
  • Emergencies involving the airways
  • Emergencies involving trauma, and other emergencies

Other subjects are in the planning stage

Contents of Modules

One advantage of the modules’ construction is, among others, the better structuring of the information steps, the user-feasibility, and the flexible way of complementing the subjects and making them topical.

  • The Hospitation Module (with the single study facility for the inexperienced trainee, with clear pictures of medicinal subjects and medications currently used. In this way, “experience looks over its shoulder at learning”
  • Training Module, with interactive exercises, working through the Hospital Module, for the practised user.
  • Medications and Internet web sites in related fields (additional information about medication and the emergency medicine field- for example, instructions regarding use, formulated from discussions with the manufacturers).
  • Basic knowledge of emergency medicine (information on intubation and other basic steps which are not necessarily new)
  • Tips and tricks (experienced non-doctors give further information which can’t be found in any textbook!)
  • Background (negotiating the medically based part of costly 3-D methods of computer animation).
  • Algorithms (flow charts for the correct management of emergencies).

Target Groups/ User Areas

  • For different needs of various target groups, variations from the conventional programs are available: Experienced doctors and doctors in training
  • Rescue personnel, hospital nursing sisters, nurses and orderlies, to refresh and build their knowledge of emergency medicine
  • Medical students, to build up knowledge in the field of emergency medicine.
  • Industry: As a timely service for everybody, looking after target groups and customers alike.
